The remains of Ukrainian nationalist Yevhen Konovalets, who lived from 1891 to 1938, were exhumed from a cemetery in the Rotterdam neighborhood of Crooswijk. Konovalets was murdered in 1938 by an agent of the NKVD, the secret service of the then Soviet Union.

President Zelensky announced the news and confirmed that the remains will be temporarily reburied at a military honor cemetery in Kyiv. This temporary reburial marks a step in the process toward their eventual placement at a memorial site for national heroes.

The excavation of the remains took place on Tuesday and is part of efforts to honor Ukraine's history. Konovalets is recognized as an important figure in the Ukrainian nationalist movement.

The reburial in Kyiv carries symbolic significance for Ukraine, which is bringing attention back to the legacy of its national heroes, especially in the current geopolitical context.

Plans for the permanent relocation of the remains to the memorial site are still under development, but attention to Konovalets' life and death remains relevant to Ukrainian identity.
