Police Prohibit Local Security Groups from Osun Election Operations

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced that several local security outfits will be barred from providing security during the upcoming Osun State governorship election. This includes the Western Nigeria Security Network known as Amotekun, the Joint Civilian Task Force (CJTF), hunters' associations, and community-based security groups, as well as neighbourhood watch outfits.

According to reports, the police stated that these non-state and quasi-security formations do not have a recognized role in election security operations, emphasizing that their involvement is not permitted.

The election is scheduled to take place on August 15, 2026. In preparation, security measures are being strengthened to ensure a peaceful electoral process within the state.

In connection with these arrangements, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has deployed Deputy Inspector-General of Police, DIG Ishyaku Mohammed, to oversee security operations during the election.

The decision to exclude local security outfits follows concerns about the role and authority of these groups during electoral events, underscoring the emphasis placed on formal law enforcement agencies by the police.
