Order of Doctors calls for assessment of hospital resilience to earthquakes

The Order of Doctors requested a national assessment on Wednesday of the resilience of hospitals in relation to earthquakes and other disasters. The proposal aims to ensure that essential units such as emergency rooms, intensive care, and operating theaters remain operational during emergencies.

President Carlos Cortes emphasized the importance of hospitals not becoming "yet another victim" in disaster scenarios. This appeal follows a statement of solidarity for the victims and their families after the recent earthquake in Colombia.

According to Cortes, the assessment is crucial for identifying and correcting structural weaknesses that could compromise the healthcare services' response in the event of a natural disaster.

A report from FUNDEC had already pointed out severe vulnerabilities in various healthcare facilities in the Lisbon and Algarve regions, indicating an urgent need for improvements in hospital infrastructure.

The Order of Doctors reiterates that it is essential to adequately prepare hospitals for seismic risks, with the goal of protecting the safety of patients and healthcare professionals.
